About me

Hello and welcome! My name is Heather Applegarth and I am originally from Syracuse, NY. I moved to Charlotte in 2015 with my husband and two daughters. This year begins my sixteenth year teaching Spanish and I am excited to be spending it at Hopewell! I have taught every level of Spanish from exploratory through AP, and also at the collegiate level. I completed my BA in Adolescent Education and MS in Second Language Education at SUNY Cortland. I am currently a candidate in the Doctor of Educational Leadership Program at City University of Seattle. My research interests center on how personal identity and culture influence a classroom.

I believe there would be much less conflict and discord in the world if people were able to better understand the diversity among individuals, and how to communicate more effectively. Learning about other languages and cultures gives students a different perspective to help them view our world with an open mind. My desire is for my students to develop more compassion, interest, and intercultural competences to be global citizens.
